Nature, Zen and Aman in Utah

A world away from civilization, seemingly camouflaged within the virgin red-rock country, Amangiri claims 600 acres of the vast Colorado Plateau. It’s a destination that reminds us why we travel. One defined by a commitment to peace, isolation and sensory awakening. Situated along the Utah-Arizona border, nearly twenty miles from the closest city, it’s a quiet retreat for the mind and body to reconnect with nature.

Here, less is more. The Canyon Point resort intrigues with a strictly contemporary style and minimalist décor that doesn’t impose on the landscape. Polished, beige concrete sculps the patios and plunge pools while hugging canyon walls. Nestled in a desert landscape of ridges, mesas and gorges, this hotel is intentionally designed to evade detection, as seclusion remains its chief asset and allure, particularly for high-profile celebrity guests. The Chinle Site and Desert Lounge afford beautiful dining experiences beneath a sky of stars untouched by light pollution, and the surrounding, historically Navajo country holds countless natural adventures. This is truly one of the most remarkable resorts in the United States.

Simple and spacious, Amangiri’s thirty-two rooms and suites are characterized by clean lines and natural vibes that reflect the encompassing Utah desert. Each features concrete walls, white stone floors and blackened steel fittings, as well as an outdoor lounge and firepit with gaping landscape views. Some, including the Amangiri and Desert Pool suites, even showcase private pools and sky terraces with their own unique vistas.

But it’s the resort’s private home that boasts the ultimate experience. Hidden amidst towering canyon walls and untouched land, the Mesa Home provides uncompromising privacy just minutes from the main resort. The four-bedroom contemporary flaunts a relaxed aesthetic and muted palette that complements the surrounding Grand Circle Region. It possesses two floors, a professional kitchen, dining room, fireplace, and an inviting living room that opens to a veranda. Outdoors, a sprawling terrace holds a private, fifty-meter infinity pool, sun loungers and its own dining area. Here, you’ll catch the sunsets of a lifetime.

Camp Sarika

A brief hike or five-minute drive across the desert from the main resort, Camp Sarika deepens luxury in the wilderness experience. It sits at the base of a massive rock escarpment and blends into the scenery with sand-toned canvasses blanketing every Pavilion. The camp comprises a cluster of ten capacious domiciles, each claiming one or two bedrooms, their own terrace with a private plunge pool and firepit, as well as 270-degree views of the landscape. The tented residences are centered around a shared lounge, restaurant and pool area, creating an enclave of seclusion in one of the most geologically dramatic locations on Earth. At the central Pavilion, the Camp Sarika Restaurant serves fresh fire-pit dishes from locally raised meat and Utah-sourced produce, which can be savored in a refined dining setting or beside the campfire and under the sprawling sky of stars.

Aman Wellness

The shared philosophy of Zen and peace pervades across all Aman resorts, so it’s no surprise that Amangiri hosts an elaborate Spa and wellness center that invites guests to embrace its credos. Indoor and outdoor treatment areas, Pilates and yoga studios, as well as water and flotation pavilions provide serenity in various settings. Extending over 25,000 square feet, the wellness retreat affords expert treatments inspired by Navajo healing traditions while overlooking America’s Canyon Country. Take a short hike to the top of a nearby rock formation and you’ll find an unparalleled Yoga site high above the valley floor. While practicing movement journeys on the lofty, rock protrusions, you’ll glimpse a sublime sunset descending over the Navajo National Park and, perhaps, feel the essence of hózhó.

The Colorado Plateau is one of the world’s preeminent geological showcases, encompassing 240,000 square miles and straddling The Four Corners region. At Amangiri, guests are ideally situated to explore this awe-inspiring province and its many natural wonders. The resort is closely connected to Utah’s Native American communities, affording such unique privileges as Navajo-guided tours through Monument Valley Tribal Park and ritual dances by the fire. Challenging climbs and intrepid hikes are essential experiences for adventurers, who can explore the sinuous slot canyons, navigate the Lake Powell reservoir by kayak to glimpse the 290-foot Rainbow Bridge, journey across the plateau on horseback and traverse the Cave Peak Stairway 400 feet above ground. The area also occupies the highest concentration of national parks in the country, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. To truly grasp its scope, you can also fly by helicopter or hot air balloon and view the tremendous scale of the original Wild West from on high.
